They were established in July 1955, and transitioned from the F-4J Phantom to the F-14A Tomcat in July 1981. During operations against Libya in 1986, they were fired upon by SA-5 SAM Systems. They also participated in Operation Desert Storm. and were attached to CVW-1 onboard the USS John F. Kennedy. |

They have now (2005) transitioned to the F/A-18 Hornet and maintained their same patch. The 'Sluggers' were with the USS Saratoga in CVW-17 for the majority of her time, before switching to the USS Enterprise. VF-103 adopted the "Skull and Crossbones" of VF-84 to continue their tradition. VF-103 had one of their TARPS-birds shot down by an optical SA-2 derivative in Desert Storm with the pilot being rescued and the RIO becoming a POW. This is the current version of the squadron patch. |

VA-106 Squadron Patch (Repro) Size: 4 1/2" In Stock: >5 Price: $7.00 This squadron was established as Bomber-Fighter squadron Seventeen (VBF-17) in January 1945, then redesignated as VF-6b in November 1946, then to VF-62 in July 1948, then VA-106 in July 1955, but were disestablished in November 1969. They were re-established in April 1984 to become the East Coast FRS (training squadron) for the F/A-18 Hornet out of NAS cecil Field, but have since moved to NAS Oceana, VA and are still the East Coast Hornet training squadron. |

They made their inaugural deployment aboard the USS Coral Seal (which was retired in 1989) and saw combat operations during the Operations Prairie Fire and El Dorado Canyon against Libya. They transitioned to the USS Forrestal upon return, then were decommissioned themselves when the USS Forrestal became the Navy's training carrier in 1992. |
