This is the patch for the headquarters for the F-14 Tomcats located at NAS Oceana, VA. All Tomcats are governed by "FITWING" when dealing with matters of tactics and the aircraft, but under their respective CAGs during sea and shore operations.

The VF-1 'Wolfpack' flew the F-14 Tomcat out of NAS Miramar, CA, but have since been decommissioned. They were established in Oct. 1972, and received their Tomcats the following summer. They were the only Grumman squadron to get an Air-to-Air kill during Desert Storm.

The 'Evaluators' of VX-4 was established in September '52, and is the Navy's operational test and evaluation squadron located at NAS Point Mugu, CA. They fly a variety of aircraft, but mainly the F-14 and F/A-18. They have quite a history, so for other info, drop me a line and I'll see what else I can find out. VX-4 used to fly F-14's, F-4's and F-18's out of Pt. Mugu until mid 90's when VX-5 formed at China Lake. Bothy disbanded and reformed as VX-9 at China Lake but a Pt.Mugu det still exists of VX-9 and they have the same Bunny patch. The playboy bunny patch with VX-4 or even VX-9 patch will become quite the commodity soon. As of 01OCT04 VX-9 DET in Point Mugu CA was disestablished.

The 'Vampires' of VX-9 were established as VX-5 in June 1957 and are located at NAWC China Lake, CA. They fly a multitude of aircraft out there. The playboy bunny patch with VX-4 or even VX-9 patch will become quite the commodity soon. As of 01OCT04 VX-9 DET in Point Mugu CA was disestablished.

Callsign "RIPPER", the VF-11 Red Rippers transitioned from the F-4Js to the F-14A Tomcat in 1980. They were originally designated as VF-43 in September 1950, then redesignated in February 1959. They adopted the squadron insignia of the original VF-11 which was decommissioned the day prior, but even though they carry on the tradition of the insignia, they do not carry the original VF-11 lineage which dates back to February 1927.

A Fighter squadron based on the East Coast (Atlantic Fleet), they flew the McDonnell F3H-2N Demon, which later became the F-3B. They were an All-Weather, Carrier-based interceptor. They flew mainly in the Korean War, facing the MiG-15, and carried the predecessors to the Sparrows and AIM-9. Their patch consisted of their crest displaying "POTENTIA et POTESTIAS". Decommissioned in early 1960's??

The "Tophatters" of VF-14 from NAS Oceana fly the F-14A Tomcat and is the oldest US Navy squadron with a continuous history dating back to September 1919. They received their latest aircraft in January 1973, replacing the F-4B Phantoms. This patch is the "old style" they used to have before they switched to the TopHat design.

VF-14 most recently participated in the Kosovo crisis as one of two Tomcat squadrons on station in the Adriatic Sea aboard the USS Roosevelt. They returned from their normal cruise rotation on September 21 of this year. The squadron history also had them participating in Desert Storm, but have since resumed their normal Mediterranean cruises.
