In April 1945, VBF-20 was established. They later became VF-10A in November 1946, then VF-92 in August 1948, then finally VF-74 in January 1950. They flew the F-4S until February 1983, then transitioned to the Grumman F-14A Tomcat. They went to sea in April 1984 aboard the USS Saratoga (CV-60) and flew against Libya in 1986 exercises. They transitioned to the F-14A+ (later redesignated the F-14B) and flew numerous missions in the Gulf War.

The original "Jolly Rogers" were from VF-84, but have an interesting squadron history. They were initally designated as VA-86 on 1 July 1955, but were redesignated to VF-84 on the same day! They were the second squadron to bear the VF-84 designation and bore the proud "Skulls and Crossbones" as their markings. They flew the F-4N Phantoms before transitioning to the F-14A Tomcat, but were decommissioned in the early '90s. They were also the squadron used in the Seagal movie, "Executive Decision", flying intercepts off the coast of Key West.

The VF-101 'Grim Reapers' are the training squadron for the F-14 Tomcat and are located at NAS Oceana, VA. They were established in May 1952 and began transitioning to the F-14 Tomcat in 1976, but also flew F-4s until 1977. They fly the F-14A and F-14B models.

The VF-102 "Diamondbacks" were located at NAS Oceana, VA and flew the F-14A Tomcat. They were established in July 1955, and transitioned from the F-4J Phantom to the F-14A Tomcat in July 1981. During operations against Libya in 1986, they were fired upon by SA-5 SAM Systems. They also participated in Operation Desert Storm. and were attached to CVW-1 onboard the USS John F. Kennedy.

They were established in July 1955, and transitioned from the F-4J Phantom to the F-14A Tomcat in July 1981 then to the F-18 Hornet in 2002. During operations against Libya in 1986, they were fired upon by SA-5 SAM Systems. They also participated in Operation Desert Storm. They currently are attached to CVW-1 onboard the USS John F. Kennedy.

The Sundowners were established in June 1956 flying F-4J Phantoms until 1978 when they replaced it with the F-14 Tomcat. It's decomm ceremony was held on 16 Feb 95 in Miramar along with VF-51, cancelling the plans of these two squadrons to be the first F-14D models.

The 'Aardvarks' flew the F-14A Tomcat out of NAS Miramar. This is the old version of their squadron patch from the Phantom era, showing crossed missiles and bombs behind a black mask. They transitioned from the Phantom to the Tomcat in December 1975, and made several West coast cruises paired with VF-213 before being decommissioned.

The 'Aardvarks' flew the F-14A Tomcat out of NAS Miramar. Their mascot was the creature "Zot" from B.C. Comics. They transitioned from the Phantom to the Tomcat in December 1975, and made several West coast cruises paired with VF-213 before being decommissioned.
